Samba is the standard SMB/CIFS file server for macOS and Linux; the modern replacement for Apple Server's File Sharing (and, with the fruit VFS module, its Time Machine service). Install with Homebrew (brew install samba) or your Linux package manager, define shares in smb.conf, and set vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr + fruit:time machine = yes for network Time Machine backups.
