Enfour was created at the request of Apple in 1992. Apple originally outsourced its Developer Technical Support (DTS) to us, placing our team alongside Mac developers from the very beginning. That foundation — understanding the platform deeply, supporting people who build on it, and making complex systems dependable — still shapes FrontierStack today.

It started before the web

Enfour began in the bulletin-board era — running BBS services from 1992 for communities of users back when “online” meant a modem and a phone line. We ran them on Macs. That was the first of many times we’d bet a production service on Apple hardware, and it paid off.

Onto the web — without ever switching platforms

We were serving HTTP content from 1995, in the earliest days of the web — and we never looked back. Mail, web hosting, databases, the services people depended on — served from Macs through every era of Mac OS, OS X and macOS. While the industry drifted to Linux boxes and rented clouds, we stayed, because a Mac, run properly, is a superb server and we had already proven it for years.

A fleet of Xserves at the turn of the century

By the turn of the century we were serving commercial mobile web apps from a fleet of Apple Xserve servers — running a real, paid mobile service on Apple’s rack-mount Macs years before the smartphone made “mobile web” a household phrase. Managing a rack of Macs as production servers is not new to us; it is what we have always done.

Oh, and we did mobile first

Oh, by the way — mobile isn’t new to us either. Back in 1993, Enfour wrote the first third-party app ever for the Apple Newton, and we created the official Japanese release of the Newton — not to mention our work for Sony and Nokia mobile devices back in the day. And here’s the fun one: about half of the emoji everyone types today were created by Enfour, in 1996. So when it comes to mobile, we’re no slouches either — which is exactly why the free FrontierStack iPhone & iPad app feels right at home.

Working with AI since 2014

AI isn’t a bandwagon for us either. We have been working with AI since 2014 — long before the current wave — so when we made it the engine that drives FrontierStack, it came from years of hands-on experience, not a press release.

Why we built FrontierStack

FrontierStack is that experience, made into an app. Every pane — web servers, TLS, the firewall, fleet management, the Malware Audit, the AI Administrator — comes from decades of actually operating these things on Macs in production. When Apple wound down macOS Server, the know-how did not disappear; we put it here, so you can run your own servers the way we always have.

Self-hosting on a Mac is not nostalgia. It is 30+ years of doing it — brought up to date for the AI age.
