NVMe is the local SSD protocol; NVMe-oF extends it across a network over TCP (port 4420), RDMA/RoCE, or Fibre Channel. Tooling: Linux nvme-cli — nvme list, nvme list-subsys -o json, nvme smart-log /dev/nvmeN (health/wear/temp), nvme discover/nvme connect (-t tcp/rdma/fc). Target side: kernel nvmet via nvmetcli or configfs (/sys/kernel/config/nvmet). On macOS the internal SSD shows under system_profiler SPNVMeDataType. Monitor: watch an NVMe/TCP target's 4420 here (Remote Instance → Alerts); pull nvme smart-log/list-subsys over SSH for path & wear health.
