Netatalk is an open-source AFP file server for older Macs that cannot use modern SMB reliably. It is mainly a compatibility bridge for classic Mac OS, early OS X and surviving Xserve-era workflows; new deployments should prefer Samba/SMB. It runs on Unix-like hosts, including Linux, BSD and macOS. Keep a compatibility service on a trusted LAN or VPN, review its authentication settings, and plan a staged migration.
