LanguageTool on a Mac
Self-hosted grammar & style checker (offline Grammarly alternative) · Tools
LanguageTool checks grammar, spelling and style in 25+ languages. Self-host its HTTP API server so your text never leaves your machine: run the Java server (java -cp languagetool-server.jar org.languagetool.server.HTTPServer --config server.properties --port 8081 --allow-origin "*" — needs a JRE) or a Docker image (note the popular Erikvl87/docker-languagetool image listens on :8010, not the default 8081). The API is POST /v2/check (text + language → matches) and GET /v2/languages; point the browser extensions, Obsidian, LibreOffice or your editor at your own server instead of the cloud. The hosted service (api.languagetool.org) works the same way, with a username + API key for Premium. Monitored live in this pane — languages served plus a real check call to prove the engine actually runs.
