Prometheus scrapes metrics from exporters (node_exporter, Apache/MySQL exporters…) into a time-series DB with PromQL queries and Alertmanager routing. Install with Homebrew and run as a service; the UI/API serve on port 9090. Point Grafana at it for dashboards.
