Google Maps Platform API on a Mac

Google Maps, Geocoding, Places, Routes & Static Maps APIs · Maps & Geocoding

Create API keys in the Google Cloud console under Google Maps Platform > Keys & Credentials; each key belongs to a Cloud project that must have a billing account and the individual APIs (Maps JavaScript, Geocoding, Places, Routes, Static Maps…) enabled. Restrict every key twice: by application (HTTP referrers for browser keys, IP addresses for server keys, bundle/package IDs for apps) and by API, and use separate browser and server keys. Web-service calls pass key= as a query parameter (newer Places/Routes APIs also accept an X-Goog-Api-Key header). The Geocoding API answers HTTP 200 even for a bad or restricted key, with status REQUEST_DENIED and an error_message in the body. Since March 2025 the old US$200 monthly credit is replaced by free monthly usage per SKU; quotas and budget alerts are set in the Cloud console.
