WireGuard is the lean, high-performance VPN protocol underneath most modern meshes (Tailscale, NetBird, Netmaker). Install wireguard-tools with Homebrew for wg/wg-quick: host your own server (generate keys with wg genkey, write wg0.conf, wg-quick up wg0, forward UDP 51820 on the router; each laptop/phone gets a QR-able peer config), or build point-to-point/hub-and-spoke tunnels by hand. The overlay tools automate key exchange and NAT traversal on top of it; for a simple web UI use wg-easy. Pair with the Locations feature: an "On VPN" location keeps monitoring sane while tunneled home.
