FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search) is a library for fast nearest-neighbour search over dense vectors — the in-process engine behind many RAG pipelines. It's not a server: pip install faiss-cpu (or faiss-gpu) and use it from Python, persisting the index to disk. For a networked vector database, see Qdrant, Milvus or pgvector.
