OpenVPN is the long-standing, battle-tested open-source VPN — flexible SSL/TLS tunnels over UDP or TCP, mature certificate PKI, and clients on every platform. Install the community engine with Homebrew (brew install openvpn) for the openvpn daemon: build a CA and certs (with Easy-RSA), write a server.conf (UDP 1194) or connect a client with a .ovpn profile — sudo openvpn --config client.ovpn. On macOS the Tunnelblick app (also in this section) is the friendly GUI client for those profiles. For a turnkey server with a web admin UI and per-user provisioning, use OpenVPN Access Server (see the alternative repos below). Pairs with the Locations feature — an “On VPN” location keeps monitoring sane while tunneled.
