VLC plays everything — and exposes remote-control interfaces: vlc --extraintf http --http-password secret serves a web remote + status API on :8080, --extraintf telnet a telnet console on :4212, plus Lua scripting. Pin a kiosk Mac/Pi running VLC with the VLC platform to check those ports.
