Nagios Core is the veteran check-and-alert monitor — host/service checks via the plugins collection, with escalations and a CGI web UI. Install via Homebrew (nagios + nagios-plugins) or packages on a Linux box; the web UI runs under Apache CGI. Many of its plugins also work standalone for ad-hoc checks.
