Medusa is an open-source headless commerce engine in Node.js/TypeScript — a developer-friendly alternative to Shopify's backend. Scaffold with npx create-medusa-app; needs PostgreSQL and Redis. The backend/admin runs on :9000; pair it with a Next.js storefront. Highly extensible via plugins. Admin dashboard customizations: extend the admin with UI widgets (drop into product/order pages via injection zones) and custom routes/pages in src/admin/, backed by API routes in src/api/. Key gotchas: (1) Medusa prices are NOT stored in cents — never divide by 100 when displaying. (2) Use separate queries for display data vs modal data, and never conditionally load display queries based on UI state. (3) Use Medusa's semantic color classes (not hardcoded colours) so widgets stay theme-correct. Load the reference docs before building — the quick reference alone isn't enough.
