macOS has Bluetooth built in — both Classic Bluetooth (BR/EDR, used for audio, keyboards and mice) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which is what smart-home sensors, trackers and locks use. There is nothing to install on your Mac for either; the button below just opens Home Assistant's Bluetooth integration guide. Because BLE range is short and a Mac is a poor always-on hub, home-automation setups normally bridge BLE devices through a dedicated Bluetooth proxy (e.g. an ESP32 running ESPHome) or a vendor hub, then surface them in Home Assistant. You often don't need BLE at all: many gadgets sold as 'Bluetooth' also expose Wi-Fi or a cloud API, so a service can reach them that way instead — see TP-Link Tapo, or SwitchBot controlled through its Hub. BLE is only truly required for BLE-only hardware with no Wi-Fi/cloud path — for example SwitchBot's Bot/Curtain, cheap BLE thermometers, or some smart locks — and even then the device reaches the network through a BLE proxy or hub rather than the Mac directly.
